The Amizi people in Awomnuzie Autonomous Community, Ikwuano Local
Government Area of Abia state have tasked the Inspector General of
Police to take over the investigation of the murder of their kinsman,
Mr. Andrew Onwuebuibo Ukatta.
The community said they were not satisfied with the manner Abia state
Police Command has so far handled the matter. They have therefore urged
the IGP to take over the matter and order for proper and comprehensive
investigation into the murder.
Late Mr. Andrew Ukatta, 58, was murdered on January 10, 2013, in his
farm by unknown persons. His body was battered by his killers.
According to sources from the sleepy farming community, he went to
his farm to pick palm fruits where he was attacked and killed by yet
unknown persons. When he did not return, the wife was said to have
raised the alarm which prompted the community to embark on rigorous
search.
The search team discovered his body in a bush around his farm where
it was dumped by the assassins. It was discovered that he was shot and
his body also battered.
The matter was reported to the police but the community said they
were not satisfied with the manner the police investigation was being
carried out, hence their call for the IGP to take over the matter.
Amizi youth had on their own, after the incident, petitioned the Abia
state Command of the Department of Security Service,DSS,pleading for
protection. They said “we are no longer safe in our town”. The petition
was signed by Roland Uzoanya.
According to Mr. Sam Ekpo, the President General of Amizi Development
Union ,ADU, the murder of Mr. Ukatta was a tragedy to the community. He
regretted that despite the fact that the murder was properly reported
to the police at the Abia state Command, proper investigation was not
carried out on the death.
“The issue is that this is the first time this has happened in our
community. It is very strange in our community and that is why everybody
is really bitter.
“And secondly, it appeared that there wasn’t any proper follow-up,
proper investigation on what happened. So they have waited for long and
nothing seems to be coming out. So basically that is why they are
protesting”.
Maintaining that the matter was properly reported to the police, Ekpo
appealed to the IGP to ensure that the matter was not swept under the
carpet.
“I think it was reported properly because, the police followed them
in picking up the corpse from the bush where he was murdered. His death
is a tragedy to the community”, Ekpo said.
